Choose the Right “Brand” Name

If I said “Nightingale RDS,” would you know what that is? Probably not. That was the original name for the Blackout EZ window cover when I started in 2007. It was named after Florence Nightingale and aimed at night-shift nurses, with “RDS” standing for “room-darkening system.” But as my market expanded to include new moms, parents, and home-theater enthusiasts, the name became less relevant.

The name “Nightingale RDS” wasn’t helping attract the broader audience I needed. Plus, for a web-based business, I needed a name that people actually searched for. No one was looking for “Nightingale” to darken a room; “Blackout” was the term they used. Changing the name to Blackout EZ made a huge difference and helped me reach more customers.

In short, choosing the right name is crucial for your business. Make sure it’s clear, memorable, and easy to find online. A good name will not only resonate with your target audience but also improve your visibility and chances of success.

Helpful Tips:

  1. Keep It Simple and Memorable
Choose a name that’s easy to pronounce, spell, and remember. A simple name will stick in people’s minds and make word-of-mouth marketing easier.
  2. Reflect Your Brand’s Identity
Your brand name should convey what your business is about and align with your brand’s values and vision. It should give potential customers a sense of what you offer.
  3. Consider SEO and Searchability
Use keywords relevant to your product or industry in your brand name. This can improve your search engine ranking and make it easier for customers to find you online. Consider using tools like Google Trends to identify popular keywords related to your business.
  4. Check Domain Availability
Ensure the domain name for your brand is available and secure it early. A matching domain name helps with online branding and visibility. Use Namechk to see if your desired name is available across domain names and social media platforms.
  5. Verify Trademark Availability
Conduct a trademark search to ensure your brand name isn’t already in use or registered. This helps avoid legal issues and potential rebranding costs down the line. You can use the Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) to perform a comprehensive search.
  6. Test the Name
Get feedback from potential customers, friends, or colleagues. See how they react to the name and if it resonates with them. A quick survey or a small focus group can provide valuable insights. You can also use online communities like Crowdspring to gather creative input.
  7. Think Long-Term
Choose a name that will grow with your business. Avoid trendy terms that might become outdated. A name that evolves with your brand ensures longevity and keeps your brand relevant. Consider using a tool like Namelix, which generates brand name ideas that can stand the test of time.
